The summer of 2026 was all about working in an old marble quarry in the Basque Country. We had been invited three years ago by Victor Arrizabalaga to develop a proposal for Angurreta Harrobia Arte Espazioa in Mañaria. A grant from the Mondriaan Fund finally made this possible. We had never worked with stone before, so this was also a period of learning and improvising with new skills.
With all our protective gear on and the noise we are making, it is sometimes hard to take in the beauty of the surroundings.
There were many interesting visitors who came to interrupt our work with advice and commentary: Curators, historians, geologists, sculptors and marble workers. We took some time off from our electric angle grinders in the quarry, for example, to go and unpack the old toolbox from a former stonemason.
