Meanwhile, in the Living Room... (Sección transversal)
2007 Solo exhibition
“Meanwhile, in the living room... (Sección transversal)” is the culmination of a project that explores the notion of home or habitat, within the context of the large-scale urban expansion of Vitoria-Gasteiz, the capital of Basque Country, in Spain. It is a subject we have been working on for two years, resulting in a number of productions on the way, such as the bluescreen installations, a publication and the drawings "Of Mortgages and Marriages".
The final exhibition in Centro Cultural Montehermoso features the reconstruction of a house that is being built in the suburbs of Vitoria. Assembled like the television set of a soap opera, it functions as a framework for the video “Desde aquí hasta ahí” (From here to there), which is playing on the TV set in the living room.
The final scene of this video actually takes place inside the real appartment that is still under construction, showing the two future owners entering their home for the very first time.
Next to the house we placed fences enclosing the same surface area. Behind this perimeter hung 11 paintings, depicting a cross-section of the plan of Vitoria-Gasteiz. Two more videos were playing on the walls of the exhibition space, one consisting of shots from a helicopter flying over the city, and another with riding shots from left to righ of locations such as furniture shops, DIY stores, shelves of a second hand shop and the set of a local soap series (Goenkale).
Parallel to the exhibition, there was a a seminar on
alternative models for urban planning and social organization. Invited
to speak were:
Martí Manen, independent curator and critic based in Stockholm, on
“Democratic pocesses and the suburbs; the role of art”, Lise Autogena,
artist based in London, on “The Christiania Researcher in Residence
project” and Nekane Jurado, economist and member of the activist group
for social rights Elkartzen, based in Vitoria, on the issues
surrounding social housing in Vitoria.
Following the seminar there was an organised tour around the city of Vitoria, set up as a kind of dérive, in which participants are encouraged to look at the city and its expansion with new eyes, and to share their experience and interpretations with the others.
